GPA Calculator

Calculate your semester or cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Free GPA calculator that weights courses by credit hours.

A GPA (Grade Point Average) calculator computes your weighted semester GPA based on up to three courses, each with its own credit hours and grade on a 4.0 scale. The calculator multiplies each grade value by its course credits to get "grade points," sums all grade points and all credits, then divides — producing a credit-weighted average that reflects the relative importance of each course. A 3-credit course counts three times as much as a 1-credit course in the final GPA. This tool is useful for high school and college students tracking their academic performance, projecting what grades they need to reach a target GPA, or understanding how dropping or adding a course affects their average. The 4.0 scale is standard across most U.S. institutions. All calculations are private and run in your browser.

How the calculation works

GPA is a weighted average: total grade points divided by total credits. For each course, grade points = credits × grade_value (on a 0–4 scale). GPA = (credits₁ × grade₁ + credits₂ × grade₂ + credits₃ × grade₃) / (credits₁ + credits₂ + credits₃). For example: a 3-credit A (4.0) contributes 12 points, a 4-credit A− (3.7) contributes 14.8 points, a 3-credit B+ (3.3) contributes 9.9 points. Total = 12 + 14.8 + 9.9 = 36.7 points ÷ 10 credits = 3.67 GPA. The weighted average means a 4-credit course affects your GPA 33% more than a 3-credit course.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?
GPA equals total grade points (grade value times credits) divided by total credits. A 4.0 scale is standard in the U.S. for most schools.
What grade is a 3.0 GPA?
