Weight Loss Calorie Calculator

Find the daily calorie target for sustainable weight loss. Free weight loss calorie calculator.

A weight loss calorie calculator estimates the daily calorie target that produces a steady, sustainable weight loss. It starts from your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) — the calories you burn from metabolism plus activity — then subtracts a daily deficit you choose. A deficit of about 500 calories per day tends to lose roughly half a kilogram (about a pound) per week, which is the rate most clinicians consider safe and sustainable; aggressive deficits above 1000 can backfire by increasing hunger and reducing lean mass. This calculator applies the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for basal metabolic rate and layers on an activity multiplier so the target reflects your real burn.

Use it to set a daily calorie goal, to compare a moderate 300 versus an aggressive 1000 deficit, or to see how a higher activity level raises the calories you can eat while still losing weight. Enter your weight, height, age, and activity level, and set the goal to a negative number for loss. The numbers run in your browser.

When to use this calculator

  • Setting a daily calorie target for roughly 0.5 kg per week loss
  • Comparing a moderate 300 versus aggressive 1000 calorie deficit
  • Seeing how a higher activity level lets you eat more while still losing
  • Checking the TDEE a given weight, height, and age produces
  • Planning a cut before adjusting macros like protein

How the calculation works

The calculator first estimates basal metabolic rate with Mifflin-St Jeor: BMR = 10 x weight(kg) + 6.25 x height(cm) - 5 x age + sex (5 for males, -161 for females), then TDEE = BMR x activity multiplier (sedentary ~1.2, light ~1.375, moderate ~1.55, very active ~1.725). The daily target is TDEE + goal, where goal is a negative number for weight loss. For example, a 30-year-old woman at 75 kg, 165 cm, lightly active: BMR = 10 x 75 + 6.25 x 165 - 5 x 30 - 161 = 750 + 1031 - 150 - 161 = 1470, TDEE = 1470 x 1.375 ~= 2,021 kcal. A -500 goal gives a daily target of about 1,521 kcal, which should lose roughly 0.5 kg per week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the calories your body burns at rest. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) multiplies BMR by an activity factor to estimate total burn.
How many calories to lose weight?
A deficit of about 500 calories per day typically yields about 1 pound of weight loss per week. This calculator adjusts TDEE by your chosen goal.
