How the calculation works

The tip calculator uses three straightforward steps. Tip amount = bill_amount × tip_percent / 100. Total bill = bill_amount + tip_amount. Per person = total_bill / split_count. For example, a $50 bill at 18% tip: tip = 50 × 18/100 = $9.00. Total = $50 + $9 = $59.00. Split 4 ways: $59 / 4 = $14.75 per person. At 20%: tip = $10, total = $60, per person = $15. These are all simple arithmetic — no compound interest or complex formulas needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?
In the U.S., 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service. 18% is a common default. Tip more for exceptional service, less for poor service.
Should I tip on tax?
Tipping is typically calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people simply tip on the total. Either is acceptable; this calculator uses the bill amount you enter.
