Retirement Calculator

See if you are on track for retirement. Estimate your nest egg from current savings, contributions, and returns with this free retirement calculator.

A retirement calculator projects how much you will have saved by the time you retire, based on your current savings, monthly contributions, expected investment returns, and years until retirement. It uses the same compound-interest math as an investment calculator but anchors the timeline to your current age and planned retirement age, making it a practical "am I on track?" check. This tool helps you answer the most important retirement question: given what you have today and what you are adding each month, will your nest egg be enough? Adjust the return rate to account for inflation (many planners use 5-7% real return), or increase the retirement age to see how a few extra working years boost your final balance. All calculations are private and run in your browser.

What is retirement calculator?

A retirement calculator projects how much you will have saved by the time you retire, based on your current savings, monthly contributions, expected investment returns, and years until retirement. This tool helps you answer the most important retirement question: given what you have today and what you are adding each month, will your nest egg be enough? When to use this calculator

  • Checking if you are on track to retire at a target age
  • Comparing the effect of retiring at 62 vs. 65 vs. 70
  • Seeing how a higher monthly contribution closes a retirement gap
  • Running conservative return estimates (5%) to stress-test your plan
  • Understanding how much of your nest egg comes from contributions versus investment growth

How the calculation works

The calculator computes two values. First, the growth of your current savings as a lump sum: FV_savings = current_savings × (1 + r)^n, where r is the monthly rate and n is the number of months until retirement. Second, the future value of ongoing monthly contributions: FV_contrib = monthly_contribution × [(1 + r)^n − 1] / r. The retirement nest egg is the sum of both. For example, at age 30 with $50,000 saved, $1,000/month contribution, 7% return, retiring at 65 (35 years = 420 months): r = 0.005833, FV_savings ≈ $570,000, FV_contrib ≈ $1,840,000, total ≈ $2,410,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do I need to retire?
A common rule of thumb is 25 times your annual expenses (the 4% rule). This calculator shows how your current trajectory grows over time.
What return rate should I use?
Historically a diversified portfolio returns 6-7% after inflation. Conservative planning often uses 5% to be safe.
