Gas Cost Calculator

Calculate the cost of gas for any trip. Free gas cost calculator.

A gas cost calculator estimates how much you will spend on fuel for any trip, commute, or road trip. Enter the distance you are driving, your vehicle's miles per gallon (MPG), and the current price per gallon at the pump. The calculator works out how many gallons the trip burns and multiplies by the price to give the total fuel cost. It is the same arithmetic you would do by hand, but instantly, so you can compare routes, vehicles, or price scenarios without mistakes.

This is handy for budgeting a long drive, deciding whether a cheaper gas station a few miles out of the way actually saves money, or comparing the real running cost of a gas car against an EV. Try the same trip at 25 MPG versus 35 MPG, or at $3.00 versus $4.50 per gallon, to see how sensitive your fuel budget is to each variable. Every calculation runs locally in your browser.

When to use this calculator

  • Budgeting fuel for a multi-state road trip or family vacation
  • Comparing the gas cost of two vehicles for the same commute
  • Deciding whether a remote cheaper gas station is worth the detour
  • Estimating monthly commuting fuel spend from a daily distance
  • Benchmarking a gas car's running cost against an EV charging cost

How the calculation works

Fuel cost is straightforward: Gallons = Distance / MPG, then Total Cost = Gallons x Fuel Price. The cost per mile is simply Fuel Price / MPG. For example, a 200-mile trip in a 28 MPG car at $3.50/gal: gallons used = 200 / 28 ~= 7.14 gal, fuel cost = 7.14 x $3.50 ~= $25.00, and cost per mile = $3.50 / 28 ~= $0.125. Bumping MPG to 35 drops the trip cost to about $20.00, and at $4.50/gal the same 200-mile/28-MPG trip costs about $32.14.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fuel cost calculated?
Fuel cost equals distance divided by your vehicle's MPG, multiplied by the price per gallon. This calculator automates that for any distance.
How can I reduce fuel costs?
Maintain proper tire pressure, avoid aggressive driving and excess idling, remove extra weight, and combine trips to keep the engine warm.
