401(k) Calculator
Project your 401(k) balance with employer match. Free 401k retirement calculator.
A 401(k) calculator projects how a workplace 401(k) retirement account grows over time. A 401(k) lets you contribute pre-tax dollars straight from your paycheck, often with an employer match that is effectively free money (a common match is 50% of contributions up to 6% of pay), and the balance compounds tax-deferred until withdrawal in retirement. This calculator applies the standard compound-growth formula to your starting balance, monthly contribution, assumed return, and years to grow, so you can see the long-term payoff of starting early and contributing consistently.
Use it to estimate whether you are on track, to see how maxing out contributions versus the minimum changes the final balance, or to model the impact of an employer match. Run the same inputs at 5%, 7%, and 9% to bracket conservative versus optimistic markets, and try 20 versus 30 years to see how time in the market dominates timing. The numbers run in your browser.

How the calculation works
The 401(k) calculator splits growth into two parts. Lump sum growth: FV_lump = P x (1 + r)^n, where P is the current balance, r is the monthly rate (annual return / 12), and n is the number of months. Contribution growth: FV_contrib = C x [(1 + r)^n - 1] / r, where C is the monthly contribution (yours plus any employer match). Total = FV_lump + FV_contrib, tax-deferred until withdrawal. For example, a $50,000 starting balance plus $1,500/month (including a $500 match) at 7% for 30 years: r = 0.005833, n = 360, FV_lump = 50,000 x (1.005833)^360 ~= $381,600, FV_contrib = 1,500 x [(1.005833)^360 - 1] / 0.005833 ~= $1,828,800, total ~= $2,210,400. The $540,000 of out-of-pocket contributions grew to over $2.2 million.
